A cyber attack forced Polish Space Agency POLSA to take down its IT network. Signs point to a ransomware attack, but the details aren’t concrete.

POLSA was founded in 2014 as an executive agency working under the Polish Ministry of Economic Development and Technology. If a large-scale cyber attack were successful, the dangers include knocking out satellites, impacting weather prediction capabilities, the loss of confidential information, and even national defense capabilities.

POLSA explained the situation on its official X account.

“There has been a cybersecurity incident at POLSA,” POLSA’s post reads. “The relevant services and institutions have been informed. The situation is being analyzed. In order to secure data after the hack, the POLSA network was immediately disconnected from the Internet. We will keep you updated.”

While the Polish government hasn’t pointed fingers at any specific hacking group or country behind the attack, tensions between Russia and Poland are higher than they’ve ever been. Similar attacks on critical infrastructure have recently been carried out by Russian-backed threat actors, causing some experts to suspect Russia is behind this attack as well.

Poland also recently accused Moscow of attempting to destabilize the country, including Warsaw’s strong support for Ukraine. Still, it’s possible that independent threat actors were attempting to steal sensitive secrets from Poland’s space agency.

POLSA reached out to the news agency PAP to explain the situation and explain that they had taken emergency measures to protect its most sensitive data. Poland’s Minister of Digital Affairs, Krzysztof Gawkowski also gave an explanation over X, pointing to the situation being contained.

“In connection with the incident, the systems affected by the attack have been secured,” Gawkowski writes. “CSIRT NASK, together with CSIRT MON, supports POLSA in activities aimed at restoring the Agency’s operational functioning. Intensive operational activities are also being conducted to identify who is behind the cyberattack. We will publish further information on this matter on an ongoing basis.”
