While Welsh lawmakers revealed plans last week to outlaw greyhound racing due to the alleged harm it causes dogs, the sport is not being banned in Northern Ireland, Scotland, or England.
Lisa Nandy highlighted the economic contribution greyhound racing generates
UK Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport Lisa Nandy highlighted the economic contribution greyhound racing generates and the joy it brings to people across the region after Shadow Culture Minister Louie French asked if a similar decision is on the horizon. Nandy said that the government has “absolutely no plans whatsoever” to curtail the activity.
There’s no set date yet for introducing the ban in Wales, which only has a single greyhound track, compared to one in Scotland, two in Northern Ireland, and 18 in England.
Regarding the growing concern over the sport, the Greyhound Board of Great Britain believes the decision in Wales is related to pressure from the “extreme” animal rights movement rather than dog welfare.
Other jurisdictions have announced similar bans recently, including New Zealand.
