FutureMakers Newsletter 7 March, 2025

Tēnā koe Michael
In this week’s newsletter I’m inviting you to join me in spreading the word and helping grow the community of those willing to commit themselves to transformation in our education system. I’ve also shared a couple of posts from NZ educators involved in transformation – despite the current turmoil, there’s still lots of great stuff happening in schools! Now is the time to act!

In this newsletter…

Help Me Add Another 500 subscribers!

Over the past few weeks I’ve had emails from people who’ve read my work for the first time having been forwarded my newsletter or blog posts by a friend or colleague. This is great – but I’d love it even more if these people and even more were subscribers to my list so that these posts could be delivered directly to them in the future. My invitation to you is to forward this newsletter to a number of your colleagues this week and invite them to become a subscriber to the FutureMakers blog and newsletters. It’ll cost them nothing, but will ensure they’re kept informed about the future-focused news and items I share.

Transformation Call to Action

My post titled Transformation Call to Action follows my previous posts on system persistence and patterns of reform failure, and aims to inspire and invite educators from across New Zealand and elsewhere to join the ‘movement’ for transforming our education system that is so urgently required. This post isn’t simply a call to action, it provides a framework to guide how to become involved, offering a starting point for everyone, regardless of your position in our system. Please share this post (and the previous ones) among your colleagues and invite their participation in this ‘movement’.

Leading Through The Lens of Two World Views

My friend and colleague Maurie Abraham wrote a post asking How Might We Lead Through The Lens of Two World Views after attending a hui we we at in Auckland last week. It’s a very honest reflection of his thoughts after hearing the challenge from one of the participants who stated: “Actions since 1840 have let down both partners to Te Tiriti. Te Tiriti promised that 2 world views would shape our country. Ours (Māori) has been problematised and you have missed out on experiencing the world through ours.
I recommend you read it!

Redefining Education

Dr. Michael Harvey is Director of Innovative Learning at Marlborough Boys’ College in Blenheim, and in this podcast interview with my friend Barbara Bray titled  Redefining Education with Curiosity, Innovation, and a Dash of Kiwi Humour, he explains his passion making education more equitable, engaging, and future-ready. I particularly appreciated his point about the SDGs perpetuating our current emphasis on economic growth – and how we need to be thinking beyond that for the future.

Free Playbook

The most downloaded resource from the Aurora Website in 2024 – you can download your own free copy of Agency By Design: An Educator’s Playbook to help guide you and your staff/school through the process of creating a learning environment where learner agency can flourish.
This playbook has been designed especially to be used either personally or as a focus for your professional learning community.
If you’d like to access some support for using this resource in your school please contact me by using the link below.
