There has been plenty of conference realignment in the last few years. Here is the conference realignment outlook for 2025.
C-USA
Delaware Blue Hens
Previous Conference: CAA (FCS)
City: Newark, Delaware
Delaware has had a football team since the 1800s, but they are now moving up to the FBS. For most of their history, they have been independent. They have been in a conference every year since 1986, playing in the Yankee, Atlantic 10 and CAA. They have an all-time record of 739-485-44. They have had some success in making the FCS playoffs historically and that even extends to recent memory. The Blue Hens have made four FCS Playoff appearances since 2018.
In the FBS, Delaware will play in the C-USA. The conference has had some teams leave for other conferences, which makes their arrival important to keep up the number of institutions in the conference. Ryan Carty is the head coach who is leading Delaware into the FBS level. He has a 26-11 record over three seasons. While the jump to a new level can be tough, Carty will have 11 returning starters to work with.
Missouri State Bears
Previous Conference: MVC (FCS)
City: Springfield, Missouri
Missouri State has also had a football program for a long time, starting in 1909 (although they didn’t have a team in 1913). They have been in the MVC since 1986. They were Division II until 1982, then moved to the FCS (then D-I AA). Their all-time record is 492-532-39.
Their postseason success isn’t the same as other programs that have made the jump from the FCS level to the FBS level, but they do have some things to note. They made the playoffs in 1989 and 1990. More recently, Missouri State made the playoffs in 2020 and 2021.
The Bears are joining the FBS as a member of the C-USA. The conference has had some teams leave for other conferences, which makes their arrival important to keep up the number of institutions in the conference. Ryan Beard is at the helm for the Bears as they transition up. He has a 12-11 record over two seasons with the team. With 11 starters back, Missouri State may not finish in the cellar of the conference during its first season in the conference.
MAC
UMass Minutemen
Previous Conference: Independent
City: Amherst, Massachusetts
UMass is making a return to the MAC! They were formerly in the conference from 2012 to 2015. They moved up to the FBS from the FCS level in 2012, but were independent from 2016 through last season. The Minutemen played their first season in 1879 and have compiled a record of 577-624-50.
Joe Harasymiak is entering his first season as head coach of UMass. He has been an assistant at Maine, Minnesota and Rutgers before taking over the Minutemen. He’ll only have three returning starters, so competing in the MAC will be tough from the start.
